While with NC State University Energy Management, I was responsible for team coordination, schedule, layout, and selected writing for state-mandated annual reports and a campus energy strategic plan.

In addition to the overarching reports, each energy initiative was required to present a business case, a plan for implementation and an analysis of university business units affected by the plan.  After implementation, summary of results and lessons learned was reported back to upper management.

Strategic Energy Management Plan

Strategic Energy Management Plan Cover.jpg

The purpose of the Strategic Energy Management Plan is to reduce energy consumption and improve energy efficiency on the NC State campus consistent with the needs for a safe, secure, and inviting campus community.  This is to be accomplished by developing 41 methodical and aggressive approaches for efficient energy use.

The general goals of the Strategic Energy Management Plan are to:
• Implement strategies to comply with legislative mandates for energy and water use reduction.
• Meet and exceed the intent of the UNC System Sustainability Plan.
• Support and complement the campus Sustainability Strategic Plan and the campus Climate Action Plan.
• Establish organizational and financial structures that will enable the Plan.
• Evaluate required investments in capital and operating funds to realize the mandated reductions and campus commitments.
• Identify enabling legislation or budgetary changes necessary to produce results.
• Modify the culture at NC State to exemplify leadership in campus energy efficiency.

The 41 components of the plan are divided across 5 program areas:
• Energy Data Management
• Energy Supply Management
• Energy Use in Facilities
• Equipment Efficiency
• Campus Energy Integration

Strategic Energy and Water Annual Report

2011 Annual USI Report Cover.jpg

The Strategic Energy and Water Annual Report is created to report the latest energy consumption data, trends, and projections for the upcoming year.  The annual report is required to be submitted by each of the University of North Carolina System Schools.  The State Energy Office compiles all of the reports and analyzes the data for projections and trends through the system.

One of the goals of the report is to track progress on reduction of energy and water consumption, based on several Key Performance Indicators (KPI) but focusing on the aggregate energy consumption per gross square foot.

KPI tracked within the report are:
• Total Utilities Cost per Gross Square Feet
• Total Energy Cost per Th ousand Gross Square Feet per
• Degree Day
• Total Energy Consumption in BTU’s per Gross Square Feet
• Total Energy Consumption in BTU’s per Gross Square Feet per Degree Day
• Total Water Cost per Gross Square Foot
• Water Consumption in Hundred Cubic Feet (CCF) per Gross Square Foot
• Total Heating and Cooling Degree Days (DD)
• Campus Area (GSF)
• Growth in Research Programs ($)
• Utility Cost per Student ($/FTE)

Intersession Energy Savings Initiative

2010-11 Intersession Setback Report Cover.jpg

During the period between Thanksgiving 2010 and January 2011, I ran an annual energy savings initiative through the coordinated roll back of utilities to vacated buildings during the university holiday.  In previous years, the program began after the completion of final exams, and ended over the weekend before classes began in January.

For this initiative, I added the Thanksgiving holiday to the setback, as well as a slowdown period between Thanksgiving and the end of exams.  The progressive shutdown as buildings were vacated added approximately $16k in avoided energy costs over and above the $180k in savings demonstrated for the primary program.
